Deane
M. Evans, FAIA
Director
Deane Evans is a Research Professor and serves
as Executive Director of the Center for Architecture and Building
Science Research at NJIT.
Mr. Evans has over 20 years experience - in both
the private and public sectors - in architectural design, construction
technology and building performance. For twelve years Mr. Evans
was in private practice with Steven Winter Associates, Inc.,
an architecture/engineering firm in New York City, where he
rose to the position of Senior Principal. In January 1990, Mr.
Evans became the first, full-time Director of the AIA/ACSA Council
on Architectural Research, an organization jointly sponsored
by the American Institute of Architects and the Association
of Collegiate Schools of Architecture. The Council's main purpose
was to foster research which benefited both the architectural
curriculum and activities within the profession, and which positively
impacted the built environment and the public at large.
In January 1995, Mr. Evans accepted appointment
as the first Vice President for Research at the American Institute
of Architects. In addition, he assumed management responsibility
for the AIA's "Allied Member" and "Continuing
Education Products" programs.
In January 1998, Mr. Evans accepted appointment
as the founding Director of the Partnership for Advancing Technology
in Housing (PATH). PATH is a new public/private partnership
to accelerate the creation and use of advanced technologies
as a means to improve the quality, durability, energy efficiency,
environmental performance and affordability of U.S. housing.
In January 1999, at the conclusion of his one year contract
as PATH Director, Mr. Evans left the Federal government and
returned to private practice, where he developed educational
tools for architects and their clients, including: the Affordable
Housing Design Advisor and the High Performance School Buildings
Resource and Strategy Guide.
On October 1, 2001, Mr. Evans accepted appointment
as Executive Director of the Center for Architecture and Building
Science Research at NJIT, where he also serves as Director of
the Educational Facilities and Housing/Community Development
programs.
Mr. Evans is a registered architect, a Fellow
of the American Institute of Architects and currently serves
as the Vice Chair of the Sustainable Buildings Industry Council.
He has a B.A. from Yale University and an M.Arch. from Columbia.

Paul J. Romano, AIA
Senior Research Architect
Mr. Romano, a Senior Research Architect at the
Center, is currently leading the effort to; define the characteristics
of educational facilities for the nearly four hundred plus schools
to be constructed over the next decade by the New Jersey Schools
Construction Corporation, educate the team members participating
in this effort, and provide monitoring and analysis of the results
so as to continually improve the performance of both the process
and facilities to serve the next generation of students.
Prior to joining the Center, he was a Project
Architect with Platt Byard Dovell & White, a NYC architectural
firm specializing in educational and adaptive reuse projects.
As an Associate of Steven Winter Associates, building system
consultants specializing in sustainable design, he developed
innovative prototypical housing for some of the nation's largest
home builders under the DOE Building America Program and provided
technical assistance to numerous governmental and industry clients
including the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the Federal
Emergency Management Agency, the Louisiana Pacific and Dupont
corporations. In addition to these consulting services he continues
to lecture at both academic institutions and professional events,
including the City University of New York, Oberlin College,
NJIT, and the USGBC and NESEA annual conferences.

Alan J. Aboyme
Research Assistant
Alan J. Aboyme, M.Arch, is a Research Assistant
in the CABSR Education Facilities program. Responsibilities
include working in the NJ School Construction Corporation and
NJDEP's High Performance Building Design Workgroups. Since joining
the Center, he obtained LEED professional accreditation. Mr.
Aboyme received a BS in Environmental Planning and Design from
Rutgers University with areas of study in Environmental Science,
Economics, and Landscape Architecture. He then received a Masters
degree from NJIT's School of Architecture. Prior experience
includes working as a Property Manager for a commercial real
estate developer and Project Manager for various construction
and renovation projects which included contract and material
procurement, administration and supervision.
