Educational Facilities Research
New Jersey High Performance
Schools Information Center
The purpose of the New Jersey High Performance
Schools Information Center is to develop and disseminate credible,
up-to-date information on the planning, design, construction,
financing and operation of K-12 school facilities. The Center's
goal is to provide the SCC - and school personnel across the
U.S. - with unbiased, research-based information needed to
create state-of-the-art learning centers. For more information
on the activities of the Information Center please access
www.hpsnj.org.
Educational Facilities
in New Jersey
The Center tracks the full range of educational
facilities issues confronting New Jersey and the U.S. in order
to help maximize the quality of learning environments that
are vital to the long-term social and economic health of the
state and its citizenry. Growing and increasingly diverse
enrollments, aging infrastructure, and changing program needs
driven by the introduction of technology and the adoption
of the Core Curriculum Content Standards, present the state
with a capital expenditure requirement conservatively estimated
at $6 billion over the next decade.
Activities included:
"School Facilities: A Challenge
for New Jersey, " by James Paul Nichols and Joan
Ponessa. A report isssued in November 1997 gives a preliminary
overview of policy issues relating to public school facilities
in the coming decade as well as enrollment, funding, design,
construction, management, and maintenance. Co-sponsored by
the Public Affairs Research Institute of New Jersey.
"School Facilities Development - A Board
Member's Perspective," was presented at the Public
Education Institutes Roundtable on School Facilities
at Rutgers University in December 1996.
"The Procurement of Design and
Construction Services by the State of New Jersey,"
a report for the DBC Task Force, New Jersey State Department
of the Treasury, 1995.

The Impact of Educational Technology
on School Facilities
Building on the CABSR Educational Facilities
Group's expertise in technology planning for school facilities,
current activities focus on the design implications of the
classroom use of computers for instruction, child-centered
learning, telecommunications, distance learning, and Internet
research. The goal of this work is to help transfer the experience
gained by pioneers in technology-rich instruction to a broader
cross-section of school districts, and share these results
with the design community in order to promote school facilities
that enhance and enable these model classroom applications.
Activities included:
Kushner Academy, Livingston, New Jersey
Planning and programming consultation for a new technology-rich
science wing, 1997.
Manville, New Jersey High School, Programming
study and schematic design for a new Library/Media Center
1995.
Campus Classroom Connections, a study
of technology-rich post-secondary school facilities in the
US and Europe, conducted for the New Jersey Department of
Higher Education, 1994.
